I headed back to Wasilla from The Butte the same way I came. I passed the Alaska State Fair several times now these past two days and I wanted to go. It’s one of the things I had come up here to do. Tonight was the fireworks, so I did not want to miss it. But, I could not go the fair now. I needed to be back because Sarah Palin was going to be on Greta Van Susteren‘s show and I had to do some other things on the site that I left undone on The Butte.
I had time to stop at the Wasilla Visitors Center and the Veteran’s Wall of Honor. This stop was made in conjunction with the Mat-Su Regional Birthing Center, which was another very important stop on the Sarah Palin History Tour. The hospital is the first thing you see from the Glenn as you’re turning off to go on the Parks. It tells you that you’re in Wasilla. The Wasilla Visitors Center and the Veterans Wall of Honor are located next to one another and behind the hospital.
After getting a couple of exterior shots of the Birthing Center, I moved on to the Veterans Wall. Dedicated on November 11, 1991 (November 11, is the traditional Armistice Day), the Wall honors members of all branches of our armed forces. It contains eight panels of names, a dedication plaque, a flower bed, and a dedication from the Military Order of the Purple Heart. It overlooks the bluff over the Parks and the Glenn and faces Pioneer Peak.
The Wasilla Visitors Center is a simple but beautiful log structure and looks like a hunting lodge. I turned and saw dark cumulonimbus clouds forming over Palmer – where I had just left. The bad weather was approaching – fast. My B&B was about 10 minutes away. By the time I got in and started working, a major thunderstorm was over Wasilla.
